Janitorial services utilize a variety of cleaners and detergents.  Wastes generated from janitorial services can be a source of stormwater pollution. Rinse water can contain detergents and other cleaners that degrade water quality.  Best practices and proper handling of materials can ensure that these substances stay out of our stormwater.

Best Practices for Preventing Stormwater Pollution
Dispose of wastewater properly:  Wastewater from cleaning and cleaning equipment must be discharged into a sink, toilet, or other drain connected to the sanitary sewer system within sanitary sewer discharge limits. Wastewater should never be discharged into a street, gutter, parking lot or storm drain.

Use Alternative Cleaners:  When possible, use products labeled “nontoxic" or “biodegradable." Proper practices are still required for handling and disposal of these cleaners; though these products may be less harmful to the environment, they can still have harmful effects if they enter the storm sewer.
