Former site of the Public Works building at 1201 6th Street SE

Description:

  • All facilities on this site were damaged by the Flood of 2008
  • Home to City Assessor’s Office, Building Services Division, Facilities Maintenance, Public Works Department (Construction Engineering, Engineering, Forestry, Traffic Engineering and Street, Sewer and Forestry Maintenance Divisions) and Solid Waste & Recycling Division
  • Future home of Fleet Services Division, Information Technology Department and Parks & Recreation Department Administration
  • The Solid Waste & Recycling building will be reused for cold storage
  • The new office building and operations warehouse will be built in two different phases

Estimated Timeline:

  • July 2012 - Demolition of 15th Street SW yard begins

  • Fall 2012 – Office building construction begins

  • September 2013 - Office building complete

  • Fall 2013 - Demolition of old facility

  • Fall 2013 - Operations warehouse construction begins

  • Fall 2014 - Operations warehouse complete

Funding Sources:

  • $18.5 million in FEMA funds

  • $5 million state I-JOBS grant

  • $12.5 million in City Funds

Total Project Cost Estimate: $36 million 

Historic Preservation Measures

  • Cornerstones from the northwest corner of the flood-damaged building will be reused to create a monument sign for the new City Services Center.

  •  Additionally, through an agreement with FEMA, the City is required to publish the history of the Link-Belt Speeder Corporation, and also conduct an ‘intensive level historical and architectural survey of the industrial corridors in Cedar Rapids’ to update previous historical documentation, with survey areas including existing and abandoned railroad corridors, portions of downtown, riverfront industrial areas, and other areas of major industrial land use.
