Cedar Rapids Historic Markers

The Cedar Rapids Historic Markers project is a collaborative community history project that seeks to highlight notable historic sites throughout the city.

Established in 1854, Oak Hill is the oldest cemetery in Cedar Rapids. It is representative of and a memorial to the many families and individuals who contributed to the settlement and development of Cedar Rapids—including pioneers, entrepreneurs, industrialists, immigrants, artists, educators, veterans, and reformers. The city’s religious, ethnic, racial, class, and cultural diversity is reflected here. Still an active cemetery, Oak Hill’s picturesque landscape and distinctive park-like design were created in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century by prominent landscape architects Horace W.S. Cleveland and Ossian C. Simonds.
